چکیده

The current design methods for built-up back-to-back cold-formed steel (CFS) channel compression members are considered inadequate despite several research studies in recent times. These have proposed improved DSM based equations, however, they general led to predictions of varying accuracy. Further, there were some contradicting observations regarding the effects screw connections on their behaviour and capacities. Therefore, this focused capacity CFS sections subject local and/or distortional buckling. It included tests short single failing by local-distortional interaction buckling, development validation finite element models finally a parametric study examine fastener characteristics arrangements capacities Using results, accuracy currently available equations standards recently published papers was investigated simple method is recommended. This paper presents details results including its findings. • Investigated (BC) Evaluated composite action web buckling compatibility BC members. Capacities or about twice individual member capacity. Recommended simplified reliable approach equations.

Local and Distortional Buckling of Cold-Formed Steel Members

Laminar structures have a high post-buckling strength reserve. Cold-formed steel profiles can be taken as a set of thin plate elements. Therefore it is necessary to design this type of profiles taking into account that reserve of strength in post-local buckling modes of failure. The method normally used to design this type of structures is based on the Effective Width concept. The Effective Wid...

Distortional Buckling Tests on Cold-Formed Steel Beams

Failure in cold-formed steel beams is generally initiated by one of three instabilities: local, distortional, or lateral-torsional buckling. For cold-formed steel joists, purlins, or girts, when the compression flange is not restrained by attachment to sheathing or paneling, distortional buckling may be the predominant failure mode. Experimental results on cold-formed steel beams with unrestrai...

Local Buckling Tests on Cold-Formed Steel Beams

C and Z sections are two of the most common cold-formed steel shapes in use today. Accurate prediction of the bending performance of these sections is important for reliable and efficient cold-formed steel structures. Recent analytical work has highlighted discontinuities and inconsistencies in the American Iron and Steel Institute ~AISI! and Canadian Standards Association ~S136! design provisi...

Comparative Study on Distortional Buckling Strength of Cold-Formed Steel Lipped Channel Sections

Usage of cold formed steel structural components for buildings and structures is gaining popularity in India for a decade. Hot rolled steel member behaviour and design are well developed, whereas the cold formed steel member behaviour and design is not developed fully compared to the rest of the world. The Indian code for cold-formed steel design, IS 801 was revised during 1975, which is in lin...

Impact of cross-section stability on cold-formed steel member stiffness and ductility

The objective of this paper is to provide work towards design methods to predict both the loss of stiffness and the available ductility for cold-formed steel members subject to cross-section deformations resulting from local and distortional buckling. Existing design specifications provide some guidance on how to predict the stiffness of cold-formed steel members, but no guidance on their avail...
